For just type bonuses, the Sub Stone Grid Type Bonuses page is here!

Information[]

The purpose of this document is to better explain how the Sub Stone system works for anyone unfamiliar with the grid system or would like any knowledge of how to optimize your grid.

Basics of the Grid[]

There are three main things you'll need to know for the grid, and for many of you, this is all you'll need.

  • 10% of each stat for each stone is added to the grid's base stats These stats will be applied to your party before any bonuses. So to make your grid stronger, leveling up your stones for a bigger base is the first thing to do.
  • There are two bonuses that also provide a boost to your team: the elemental and weapon bonuses. The elemental bonus is applied if the element matches for a character and stone, while the weapon bonus applies to all party members.
    • The elemental bonus is a conditional bonus that adds 15% of a sub stone's stats to the sub grid if it matches a Character's element instead of the default 10%.
    • The weapon bonus uses Character stats and sub grid stats multiplied by a modifier determined by the number of weapon matches (the bonus breakdown is found here).
  • You can insert duplicate stones into your grid. This is extremely important as this allows you to benefit from the elemental AND weapon match bonuses more easily.

The Formula[]

Overall Formula - Simplified[]

The math-heavy explanation for the formula (Including Memoria Stones on the main slot) can be found here. However, to make it easier to understand, here's a simplified version of the formula:

Total Stats = ((Character stats + Main Memoria Stone stats) + Stone stats) * Type Match Bonus

Sub Grid Specific Formula[]

For the purposes of explaining the sub grid the rest of the formula will assume the character isn’t equipping a Memoria Stone on the main slot. So the overall formula for the grid will focus on four main parts. The character stats, the stone stats, the elemental bonus, and the weapon bonus.

Total Stats If no equipped memoria stone = (Character stats + Stone stats) * Type Match Bonus

Calculating Grid Stone Stats[]

The stone stats are determined by summing up the stats of all stones inserted into the grid and taking 10% of all stones that don't match a Character's element and 15% of all stones that do match a Character's element.

Stone stats = Non-Matching Stones stats + Matching Stones

Where

Non-Matching Stones = (s1 + s2 + … + si) * 0.1
Matching Stones = (s1 + s2 + … + sj) * 0.15

So as an example, if you were to equip 9 stones of a matching element you would ignore the non-matching formula and calculate the sub stone's stats based on the matching formula.

Calculating Type Match Bonus[]

The weapon bonus is a modifier that is found in-game and is determined by the amount of weapons matched as well as the type of weapons matched. The list of modifiers can be found here. Once you have your modifier, it will stack multiplicatively on the result of the Character's stats and the sub grid's stats. Because of this, THE PARTY MEMBERS DO NOT HAVE TO MATCH SUB STONE WEAPON TYPES!

Type Match Bonus = 100% + modifier

Because of this modifier main story content is much more forgiving for multi element teams.

Elemental Matching Bonus[]

This section will explain the elemental matching bonus portion of the formula through an example. If you just want to know how to maximize this bonus, then set a grid with only 1 element and make sure it matches as many party members as you can to maximize this bonus.

How does the bonus work?[]

For a single sub-stone the calculation is simple, the stone will provide 10% of it's stats to the entire party but will give 15% of it's stats to party members that match the stone's element. HOWEVER, because we have a total of 9 slots in our grid, the calculation is slightly more complex when we include more than 1 stone, especially if you decide to use multiple elements.

Sub Stone Grid Guide (1)

Using the image above we can see that we have 6 water Memoria Stones. For each stone we check if there is a Character whose element matches the element of our current stone. If there is one, then for that character the stone will give half of what it gives to the grid to that character. For example, the total ATK of all these stones add up to 336 ATK. 10% of this makes up for the grid's base stat that will be applied to the party regardless of their element (in this case 34 ATK points). But if the Character is of water element, they get an additional 50% of the base grid stats (in this case 17 ATK points for a total of 51 ATK).

Of course, this heavily discourages multi element setups as the bonus is less impactful. For example, if we were to add 3 more stones of the fire element, we would end up with 3 values. The base stat (10% of all 9 stones), the water bonus stat (50% of what the 6 water stones give to the base stat), and the fire bonus stat (50% of what the 3 fire stones give to the base stat). It goes without saying that the bonus stat only applies when the character matches the element, thus diminishing the benefits you can get.

Elemental Matching Bonus Example[]

This example will use a party of mixed elements to properly illustrate the impact of the elemental bonus. For the following images, pay attention to Repede's and Dezel's stats.

Sub Stone Grid Guide (8)

We can see above there are no sub-stones in our grid and no main stones equipped. Repede has been leveled but this will have no impact for the purposes of this demonstration.

Sub Stone Grid Guide (9)

Here Caius's Memoria Stone will be added to the sub grid. We can see that this is before the game checks to see if the members of our party will get an elemental bonus which is why the sub stone's stats are just 10% of Caius's stone. Now lets see what happens when we confirm the grid and go back to the party screen.

Sub Stone Grid Guide (10)

While the numbers themselves aren't too impressive this will make our calculations easier. Also for convenience sake I listed Repede's and Dezel's stats before applying the stats from the grid.

Character Name Base HP Base ATK Base DEF
Repede 4,080 410 610
Dezel 1,370 100 130

We can see that Dezel got the expected stat increase of 71 HP, 7 ATK, and 6 DEF from the grid. But Repede gets 107 HP, 10 ATK, and 9 DEF. 50% more stats (rounded up) from the grid compared to Dezel.

Weapon Type Bonus[]

TLDR: Level your Characters and set as many weapon matches for early game!

Lastly we have a weapon type bonus. Unlike the previous bonus, this will apply to all characters. In exchange, this bonus requires at least 2 stones of the same weapon type to see an increase and is based on the Character's stats instead of the stats of the stones.

How does the bonus work?[]

This bonus works by taking the base stats of the Characters and the stats calculated from the sub grid AFTER adding in the elemental bonus, and multiplies it by the total modifier from all matching weapons.

Because the weapon bonus doesn't require you to match elements, this bonus will be more effective when starting out or with a party of mixed elements.

Tips for Starting Out[]

Sub Stone Grid Guide (Comic Thumb)

Click here for a handy beginner's guide comic!

  • Focus on getting weapon matches, especially if you have Characters of different elements. This will make sure your overall team strength is good and lets you hold off on leveling stones until your Characters are leveled well.
  • Look at all of your Memoria Stones. R stones can outperform SSR ones if they provide a weapon match and/or element match until you have the resources to give your stones levels.
  • Keep your stones until you need to use them. Using your duplicates to Awaken your Characters is tempting, but until the game provides ways to Awaken your Characters outside of spending your gleamstones on the summon banners or until you can farm raids consistently for Memoria Stones, it is much safer to hold on to your stones until you know you won't need them for the option of using them as a sub stone.
